What is the difference between an Assisted Living Facility and a Nursing Home?
An Assisted Living Facility is an institutional setting that offers senior citizens assistance with self care, socialization and proper nutrition. Assisted Living facilities are less restrictive and promote independence. They are usually based on a social model versus a medical model.
A Nursing Home is an institutional setting that offers skilled medical care and rehabilitation to individuals who may not be able to care for themselves. Medicare and Medicaid are usually accepted. Many individuals are admitted to a nursing home for a short term stay for rehabilitation following a hospitalization for an illness or injury. Once rehab is completed the resident may transition to an environment less restricting such as an Assisted Living Facility or Home with Homecare. Other residents transition to long-term care and make the Nursing Home their permanent lifestyle. Nursing Homes are usually medical models of care.
How can I tell if Assisted Living is appropriate for my family/friend?
Once a facility has been decided by the resident and /or family, then an assessment will be conducted by the Director of Health Services to determine the level of care of the potential resident. The level of care will be the foundation for the plan of care which will be followed. Each plan of care is designed specifically for each resident. If an individual is totally bedridden, unable to assist in transferring from the bed to the chair/toilet, or requiring ongoing skilled care such as tube feedings, dressing changes, or are harmful to themselves or others, then the individual may be beyond the assisted living level of care and would benefit more from a higher level of care.
Do Assisted Living Facilities offer transportation?
Yes, most facilities do offer transportation to and from appointments and activities. It is important to discuss the transportation policy in order to understand the program available.
What happens if my family member still drives but wants to come to an Assisted Living Facility?
Residents are allowed to have their cars. Check with each facility to discuss the policy regarding personal cars, parking availability or restrictions.
Can my family member keep their primary physician?
Yes, choosing your own healthcare provider is a resident’s right.
